Lakeside Glamping in County Clare

Relax and unwind in this beautiful rural setting.

Get away from the stress and hustle of urban life, and experience a slice of County Clare lakeside heaven…

A short walk to a lovely beach on Lough Derg; an idyllic spot for fishing, kayaking and swimming. There are walking routes, great local restaurants, friendly pubs and a whole lot of relaxing.

Front of The Bird's Nest. The former cow barn is roughly plastered, keeping the original aspect of the uneven 18th century walls. Covered in flowers and Akebia vines in summer. A bench for guests to relax and enjoy the garden is near the door.

Location

We are situated 2 kilometers from the lovely village of Whitegate, which has two excellent grocery shops and an exceptional bar/restaurant. There are no taxi services locally but there is a local link TFI bus (route 344) between Whitegate and Ennis four times daily which can be hailed from near the top of the road (10-12 min walk). If wished and by prior arrangement, lifts to and from Whitegate and Mountshannon can be provided.

A 10 to 15 minute walk from the guest house on a quiet country road, you will arrive at the lake shore to the beautiful Meelick Bay (Whitegate beach), which is a safe swimming and picnic area, and a perfect spot to launch kayaks or paddle boards for a leisurely paddle around the multitude of inlets and islands close by. Be prepared though – the lake is capable of blowing up a storm at short notice and life-jackets are not provided here. Please bring your own if you are bringing boards or boats.

Many walking routes are easily accessed from here including the entire East Clare Way for serious walkers, and a number of pretty and accessible walking circuits close by. There is a beautiful 5 km circuit from the guest house which takes approximately 50 minutes, not much of which is on the main road. Route maps and advice available on request.

Things to note

Please note that all sleeping arrangements are upstairs and unfortunately this cannot be reconfigured. If the sofa bed is to be made up, please request this at booking.

There is a wild honey bee colony living in the roof of the guest house! They have been there for over 10 years and are very docile. We don’t bother them and they don’t bother us, but guests who are afraid of bees or allergic should take this into consideration

2 of the 6(!) cats are super friendly and love beds, food and company more than anything else in the world. They are not allowed on beds and will eat your food if let. Please make every gentle effort to keep them out of the guest house!

Sadie is the best host we have ever encountered. She is friendly, informative, helpful, and generous. She left us fresh eggs, homemade bread (yum!), jam, and cordials. There was everything you needed for a delicious Irish breakfast - she thought of everything and answered all our questions about where to go and what to do with detailed links and enthusiasm. As to the space, The Bird's Nest is a precious beautiful cottage in a gorgeous garden setting. There are free roam chicks and chickens, beautiful veggies and flowers and we picked fresh berries for our oatmeal! It's the perfect size for a cozy relaxing couple's getaway. It was clean and comfy and felt like home. All in all, it couldn't have been better - do yourself a favor and go!

I would recommend Sadie’s Bird’s Nest to anyone looking for a cosy home to stay in to explore the historic land of East Clare and Lough Derg- Sadie’s welcome with her home-made food, a warm fire and lovely clean and well stocked kitchen is unbeatable 😊 The bathroom is big with lots of hot water in the shower, and the bed is large and comfortable- I would pop in again if I was in the neighbourhood. Thanks Sadie

This place was absolutely amazing. All the little details, like fresh bread, farm fresh eggs, homemade jam, a very well equipped kitchen and all the amenities needed in the bathroom, including a hair dryer. The bed was super comfortable and the water was hot without having to wait for it. The only reason I gave it only 4 stars for location is because we had a little trouble finding the road to turn off, but that may have just been us at the end of a long day. Sadie was super personable and I extremely quick to respond whenever we had a question. I can’t recommend The Bird’s Nest highly enough!
